Kensington Veterinary Clinic is a well established private practice in the heart of Prince Edward Island, Canada. We are a mixed practice serving our community of Kensington and area for over 60 years. We are equipped with in house diagnostics (Idexx, full body & dental digital radiography, ultrasound), dentistry and surgical services.

Animal Health Technician position details:
We are seeking an Animal Health Technician to join our team for a one-year maternity leave position. We are a mixed animal practice providing routine preventative care as well as in-house diagnostics, dentistry and surgical services. You would be joining a team of 2 experienced technicians, 3 small animal veterinarians, and 7 support staff of veterinary assistants and receptionists. We are seeking an individual who thrives in a team environment, takes pride in quality medicine and enjoys enhancing patient and client experience. Our clinic values communication and learning from each other. Case discussion and support of colleagues is highly valued.
We have availability for full-time and are also open to discussing flexible or part-time options. Our clinic is open for appointments Monday-Friday 8am-5pm ( shifts are 7.5 hours per day with 1 hour unpaid lunch break). On-call AHT rotation currently of one week night every 3 weeks and 1 weekend every 9-10 weekends with compensation for on-call duty as well as call-in bonus. We participate in a shared on-call group with several local practices to minimize the number of on-call shifts. We are supported by 2 local urgent care clinics as well as a triage service to help decrease after-hours on-call volume.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work within a team and communicate effectively with team members and clients.
- Successful completion of an accredited Animal Health Technology course
- RVT qualification considered a strong asset
- Experience in general practice *
- Surgical and dentistry skills *

- Able to stand, walk, bend, lift and perform other physical tasks related to animal care and handling, including lifting up to 40 lbs
Duties:
- Patient Care & Monitoring
- Stay current on all hospitalized and daily appointment patients.
- Monitor and provide treatments as prescribed; notify veterinarians of any changes.
- Ensure exceptional patient comfort and maintain accurate medical records.
- Handle, restrain, and care for animals during exams, treatments, and anesthetic procedures.
- Prepare medications, vaccines, and treatment setups.
- Perform diagnostic procedures including radiographs, sample collection, and in-clinic lab tests (fecal, urinalysis, bloodwork, cytology).
- Prepare and monitor anesthesia, surgical equipment, and patient recovery.
- Conduct technician appointments (e.g., nail trims, anal gland expressions, suture removals, ear cleanings, etc.).
- Manage day admission cases (e.g., sedated radiographs, glucose curves, ultrasounds).
- Participate in after-hours on-call rotation with the AHT/RVT team.
Communication & Support (Team and Client)
- Communicate normal lab results, medication counselling, and care updates on behalf of veterinarians.
- Provide client education on health care, nutrition, and home care.
- Admit and discharge patients for surgeries, dentistry, and day procedures.
- Fill and prepare prescription medications and refills.
- Coordinate with veterinarians, reception, kennel staff, and fellow RVTs/AHTs regarding patient status and workflow.
- Assist with answering phones and clinic communications as needed.
- Maintain inventory of treatment room supplies; notify the purchasing manager when stock is low.
- Submit radiographs and referral materials; prepare and ship external lab samples.
- Check and forward lab reports and attach results to patient records
- Share in basic cleaning and upkeep duties.
